My scholarship. An award given in my name, by me, with the help of those around me.

"The Kimberly R. Barchard award is given to a senior of the RMHS graduating class pursuing a degree in the fields of nursing, occupational therapy, or physical therapy who exemplifies courage, compassion, and dedication to helping others. This award is to show my gratitude for all of those that helped me on my own journey. Even when you think all of your odds are down, there is a way to persevere.

I am a graduate of the RMHS class of 2011. I have always enjoyed school but never knew what I wanted to be when I “grew up.” After being in the hospital for a prolonged period of time and almost losing my life, I realized that the only thing I want to do is help others. It may have taken me a life-altering journey but I finally completed my degree. I wouldn’t be here without the care and compassion of those in this field and I look forward to helping someone in the next generation of healthcare workers.

Interested students should send a personalized essay sharing why you are interested in the health profession, your future goals, and why you think you are deserving of this scholarship. "

I received four letters back in response to this.

I can't believe that those four high schoolers took the time to write letters to me on their personal experiences and goals.

I really look forward to reading essays from these kids on why they want to go into their field of work and how they plan on helping others down the road.

But how do I choose just one?

For this year, one is all I can afford. But maybe next year or in 10 years, this award will have grown and will be able to be awarded to everyone who applies.

It may not be big, but one day when I'm old and gray, I hope this scholarship has taken off and gives my son a sense of who his mom was.
